What is outplacement

Outplacement means: ‘Guidance in finding a new job for employees threatened with resignation’. The employer is not legally obliged to offer an outplacement program to employees. Good employership is a legal requirement however. An outplacement program can fall under this if the situation warrants it.

When are you entitled to outplacement?

Although offering an outplacement program is not legally required, there are a number of situations where it is mandatory. Examples of this are a settlement agreement, a collective labor agreement and good employership.

What does “good employership” mean?

Good employership is required by law. Offering outplacement in the event of an employee being dismissed can fall under good employership. In addition, there are a number of examples where an outplacement process is mandatory under good employership, such as a reorganization or the relocation of a company in which the employee experiences adverse consequences.

If you nevertheless fall by the wayside and do not qualify for an outplacement trajectory through your employer, you are always entitled to a transition compensation with which you can reimburse the program, career guidance or retraining..

What is transition compensation

Transition compensationis a payment to which every employee is entitled to when the employment contract is terminated. If the allowance is used for outplacement or retraining, you don’t even have to pay tax on it.

How do you calculate transition compensation?

From the first of January 2020, the calculation of the transition compensation has changed and you are entitled to a transition compensation from the first day of the employment contract when you are dismissed. The calculation for the amount of the transition compensation is as follows:

You will receive 1/3 monthly salary per full year of service from your first working day;

The transition compensation for the remaining part of the employment contract is calculated according to the formula:

(gross salary received on the remaining part of the employment contract / gross monthly salary) x (1/3 gross monthly salary /12 )

This formula is also used to calculate the transition compensation if the employment contract has lasted less than one year.

What does an outplacement process look like?

If you opt for outplacement, you will enter a process in which you will be assisted by an outplacement agency. The aim of the program is to get a new job with another employer. An outplacement process can differ per agency, but it generally looks like the following.

1.     Interview

The interview is an introduction to the coach, during which your situation is mapped out. Why did you have to say goodbye to your old employer and what ambitions do you have for your next employer? Based on your education level, ambitions and opportunities in the labor market, a plan is drawn up that you will go through together with your coach.

2.     Processing of the resignation

Sometimes the dismissal comes unexpected and that can have a major impact. The success of finding a new job is coping with the dismissal of the old job. Your coach can help you cope with the setback and look ahead to new opportunities. It differs per person what the processing process looks like because every situation is different. Only when the dismissal has been processed can an effective solution be found for the future.

3.     Assessment

The following questions will be considered during the assessment. What have you done? Where do you want to go? Where are you now? Once these questions have been answered, we will look at which steps need to be taken to achieve your ambition. An assessment is taken to map out your knowledge and qualities. If your ambitions do not match the knowledge you have, further training or retraining can be looked into. In addition, it is important to consider whether you want to keep doing the same job or do something different. The different steps are all guided by your coach.

4.     Take the first step

In this step you will take the first steps towards a new job. This will of course be done together with your coach, who will guide you during the preparation of the application procedure. You can think of tips and tricks during a job interview to giving advice on your CV so that everything looks good. Your digital profile is also discussed, such as your social media profiles.

5.     Feel good on the job

When you have found a new job, it is of course important that you also enjoy yourself. That is why we think it is extremely important that we have regular contact with you and your new employer to discuss how things are going. This way we can still help you if you are already at work.
